Camping in France is a popular holiday destination for Brits, especially for teachers, it is a cheap and cheerful trip over the channel to brighter weather and fine wine and rich food. The prices are much cheaper and the quality is good.
The L’Etang Bleu, the blue lake campsite is situated in the mid regions of France in popular Dordogne/Aveyron border it is a bit of a drive away from most big towns or cities but offers entertainment for the kids and adults at the bar.
The L’etang bleu is a family run site, Mark, Jo and the blondest kids ever known live and run the campsite all year round. As a family run business, the British family have made it fun and safe for kids and still offers theme nights for adults.
The site has been running for about 5 years now and was featured when the couple moved out there on the TV program Living the Dream. The couple bought the land off a French man who had shared inheritance of it with his brother. After some dispute the brothers argued split the land 50/50 one sold his share, whilst the other stayed on and runs the 3 star Auberge next door.
Since then Mark and Jo have built a successful business with regular campers who come every year and is also popular with the locals from the nearby village of Vieux-Mareuil (near Brantôme).
The site is good for the regulars but on my last visit I was a bit disappointed by the service and the prices. The bar seemed to have increased its prices, to British City prices and the service was terrible on one occasion the bar/restaurant was closed so the barman could sit and drink with his friends while I was still finishing my main course.
I hope the L’etang bleu returns to the welcoming atmosphere it had when I first visited a few years ago but I can’t say I’ll be in a hurry to go back any time soon.

I visited this site in the summer of 2009 our our family had the best time ever. Theme evenings were regularly organised and the food was great quality and not at all expensive. All the staff were friendly and Marc and Jo were on hand all the time.
Can’t wait to go back.
