Mention the word “France” and you are hit with an eclectic range of visions – from a bloke wearing onions to the Battle of Waterloo, from Zinedine Zidane to the Eiffel Tower and from French sticks to frogs legs. But one think I would suggest nobody would ever think of is camping.
Yes it is true, the French are losing their camping virginity and exploring areas which have never been explored before.
Previously, French campsites were big corporate affairs with people sprawled out with a bottle of cheap plonk waiting for the next round of bingo – very similar to Butlins actually. But wait a minute – sacre bleur the French are revolting against this whole concept. Away with your cheap ale and dodgy hot dogs and hello to exploring fruit farms and forests!
I kid you not, recently Whichcampsite.net has been intrigued by the influx of sites in the grounds of old chateaux, on organic fruit farms and also within the hills above the Riviera. Apparently these have been developed pretty rapidly to accommodate those people who are broadening their camping experiences.
There are some cracking tree houses, Romany roulettes, and Airstream trailers which are certainly proving to be very popular. This is exemplified best with reference to Le Brevedent which is located in the deepest, darkest Normandy countryside. Set within the grounds of a Louis XVI hunting lodge, this picturesque site combines isolated tranquillity with easy access to local delicacies. Apart from the historic building there is several orchards, a beautiful mirrored lake with an architecturally magnificent church providing the hidden gem in the background.
Now if you are anything like me this may all be very well but where do I find the scran when feeling a little peckish? Do not fear my friends you are just a stones throw away from the delights of the local produce – crevettes and moules, organic fruit and veg, plenty of fresh bread, and of course apples which are regularly converted into cider.
This is typical of the growing trends within France and highlights the move towards isolated, cultured camping trips rather than a general booze up in the park. This is good to see and we will of course bring you further information on this topic in the future – if we can write after all that cider of course!
