Caravans: A British Love Affair was shown on BBC four last week celebrating the love affair of caravanning with the British public. The documentary charted the growth of the caravanning after the Second World War and the subsequent changes in the industry.
Focusing on the production of the famous Sprint Caravans by the largest caravan manufactures CI (caravan international) the documentary showed how the growth in the road network in the UK opened up the British Country side with the lost costs of caravans.
Brian Henry Martin the director of the documentary said:
““The story of caravanning in Britain is actually a revealing social history. These ‘homes on wheels’ tell us so much about how attitudes towards holidays and leisure time have evolved in Britain over the past sixty years.
“Of course today people like to joke about caravans clogging up the roads. But in the course of making this programme we met remarkable people for whom caravanning has provided freedom and a genuine sense of adventure. These are people who, even back in the 1950s, took their caravans round every corner of Europe and even into Russia and north Africa.”
