Ah, the smell of the great outdoors, green fields and blue skies, who needs an exotic holiday in foreign climes? Let’s take the kids camping this year! It’s cheaper than a holiday in a hotel and we can go anywhere we like!
‘Wait!’ I hear you say. ‘What about the manky chemical toilets and creepy crawlies? We can’t take the kids away in a tiny cramped tent!’
Let me reassure you. Modern tents, such as the Coleman Evolva offer home from home living facilities and many even come with lights and ceiling fans! And if buying a family tent doesn’t strike you as a good investment for a trial holiday under canvas, then opt for a site that provides pre-pitched, fully equipped tents with electricity, separate bedrooms (and proper beds!) and even cooking equipment.
Then again, camping doesn’t even have to mean canvas these days. Lots of campsites have luxury static caravans that are better kitted out than the average 2 bedroom flat, with flushing toilets, hot showers and central heating! They’re a bit more pricey than staying under canvas but still are a LOT more economical than a bed & breakfast.
Many parents worry that camping is not suitable for very young children or babies. It really presents no problem. You just need to be prepared. I would say the only real problem parents are likely to face when camping with babies is that they have a habit of waking up when the sun comes up. Solution? A tent with curtains or one of the aforementioned static caravans! This can also solve the potentially tricky problem of hot tents. Babies aren’t good at keeping themselves at the right temperature. Extra warmth at night is called for, and a fan in the morning to keep baby cool. Lots of sites have electricity even if you are staying under canvas!
Older children will have heaps of fun exploring and living in the great outdoors. Just make sure they are aware of the campsite rules and know how to find the tent! Most campsites have ‘quiet hours that should be respected by children and adults alike.
Take a reasonably well stocked first aid kit, with all the usual stuff such as plasters, disinfectant, insect bite cream, a thermometer and your usual choice of parecetamol suspension and you’re all set. You’ll be spending a lot more time outdoors on a camping holiday so sunscreen and hats are essential!
Inflatable mattresses are a cheap way to keep everyone comfortable and will keep kids warmer at night as they are not sleeping directly on the ground.
Make sure your children pack clothes that you don’t mind sacrificing to the inevitable dirt! Two pairs of shoes and a pair of wellies is also a good idea!
