A boy aged 19 was crushed to death by falling sharp rocks as he slept yesterday.

Heat from a fire lit by the youngsters is believed to have caused the sandstone roof to fracture into loads of tiny pieces in Shropshire. A woman aged 18 suffered neck and back injuries.

The caves are a popular meeting place for local youngsters who drink alcohol, despite warning signs and a security fence intended to keep out visitors.

The dead boy was named locally as Aiden Brookes, a cricket player and air cadet. He was among a group of 12 friends who had met at the caves on Saturday night. Some had decided to go home but others chose to spend the night there camping in tents, lighting a fire to keep warm. Flames from the fire were reported to have reached up to 7ft.
